Conductor Count Conditions
The allowable fill percentage is entirely dependent on how many wires you intend to pull through a single raceway. Generally referencing the principles in NEC Chapter 9, the limits are strictly categorized:
- One Conductor: Maximum 53% fill. A single wire has ample room to dissipate heat and pull smoothly.
- Two Conductors: Maximum 31% fill. Two wires tend to oval and jam against each other, requiring a lower fill limit to ensure a safe pull.
- Three or More Conductors: Maximum 40% fill. This is the most common scenario for standard branch circuits and feeders.
Fill vs. Ampacity Adjustment (Derating)
It is vital to understand that a conduit fill calculation is not the same as an ampacity adjustment. Conduit fill deals strictly with physical volume and mechanical spacing. If you have four or more current-carrying conductors in a raceway, you may be well under the 40% physical fill limit, but you will still likely be required to derate the ampacity of those wires due to heat proximity.
