Calculate Roof Pitch, Slope, Angle & Area
Welcome to our comprehensive Roof Pitch Calculator. Whether you are a professional roofing contractor or a DIY homeowner planning a renovation, accurately measuring your roof is critical. This tool helps you seamlessly determine your roof pitch from rise and run measurements, convert that pitch into a precise roof slope or angle in degrees, and accurately perform a roof area calculation to estimate shingles and other roofing materials.
Core Calculator Features
Rise and Run Calculation
Instantly calculate your exact roof pitch by inputting your measured vertical rise and horizontal run.
Pitch to Degrees Conversion
Easily convert standard roof pitches (like a 4/12 or 6/12) into a precise angle in degrees for complex cuts.
Slope Percentage Conversion
Find the exact slope percentage of your roof, which is highly useful for drainage planning and building code compliance.
Roof Area with Pitch
Calculate the true sloped area of your roof to accurately estimate shingles, metal panels, and underlayment materials.
Common Pitch Presets
Quickly select from standard industry pitch presets to speed up your estimates without manual data entry.
Visual Roof Diagram
View a dynamic, real-time visual roof diagram that automatically updates to reflect your exact inputted slope.
How to Use the Calculator
Choose Calculation Mode
Select whether you want to find your pitch, convert an existing pitch to an angle, or calculate your total sloped roof area.
Enter Rise and Run or Select a Pitch Preset
Input your measured vertical rise and horizontal run, or quickly click one of the standard US pitch preset buttons.
Add Roof Dimensions if Calculating Area
If using the area mode, enter your building's width and length, or input the total flat base footprint.
Review Pitch, Angle, Slope, and Roof Area Results
Check the visual diagram and results panel for your exact pitch ratio, degrees, slope percentage, and area multiplier.
Roof Pitch & Area Formulas
Understanding the math behind roofing is straightforward once you know the formulas. Your basic roof pitch is calculated simply as the vertical rise divided by the horizontal run. To find the angle, you take the arctangent (inverse tangent) of that ratio. The slope percentage is just the rise divided by the run, multiplied by 100. Finally, to calculate roof area with pitch, you multiply your flat base area by a specific pitch multiplier (the secant of the angle) to account for the added surface area created by the slope.
💡 Important Planning Note
Please note that actual roof measurements can vary significantly depending on your specific roof design, including complex hips, valleys, overhangs, or dormers. These calculations provide mathematical estimates intended for initial planning only. Users should always physically verify measurements on-site before buying roofing materials or starting construction.
