ERA Calculation for 7 Innings

While Major League Baseball and college divisions play 9-inning games, many amateur leagues—including high school baseball, travel ball, and fastpitch softball—play 7-inning regulation games. Because Earned Run Average is based on a full regulation game, the standard MLB math won't work for these leagues.

How the 7-Inning Formula Works

The ERA calculation for 7 innings simply replaces the "9" in the traditional baseball formula with a "7". The new formula looks like this:

ERA = (Earned Runs × 7) ÷ Innings Pitched

Example for Softball and High School Pitchers

If a softball pitcher throws 5 complete innings and gives up 2 earned runs, her 7-inning ERA would be calculated as: (2 runs × 7) ÷ 5 innings = 2.80 ERA.

Instead of doing the fractional math by hand, you can open our ERA Calculator and select the "7 (HS/Softball)" toggle under the Regulation Innings setting. It will instantly run the exact ERA calculation for 7 innings for you, perfectly formatted.
